People often say, sometimes with a great deal of sarcasm, that a teacher’s reward is in heaven. This suggests that teaching is not a financially lucrative profession, which is true. However, the saying misses an important point about most committed teachers. For such teachers, their greatest joy and satisfaction comes from seeing their pupils and students do well and become successes in life.

At the annual @maltinateacheroftheyear awards yesterday, I reiterated the importance of teachers in society, using an example of my life’s story. Every single thing that I am today can be attributed to the impact of great teachers, who taught me to be confident in my God-given ability, and the importance of hard work. It was also the work of high-impact teachers and lecturers that contributed to my induction into the teaching profession.

The world needs more committed teachers, but beyond that, we also need to appreciate the ones currently staying the course and impacting young lives. This is why it gladdens my heart that the initiative from Nigerian Breweries, through the Maltina brand, is aimed at celebrating teachers across the country.
