Uber has announced the end of its operations in Nigeria, bringing its 12-year journey in the country to a close.
The ride-hailing company disclosed the decision in a farewell message shared with customers via e-mail on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, saying it had made the “tough decision” to wind down its operations in Nigeria effective immediately.
“We are writing to share some difficult news,” Uber said in the message.
“After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026.”
Uber, which first launched in Lagos in 2014, thanked Nigerians for embracing its service and allowing it to become part of their daily transportation routines.
“Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life connecting you with independent transportation providers,” the company said.
The company recalled how its platform had connected customers with drivers for different aspects of their daily lives.
“Whether it was a morning commute, a ride to see loved ones, or exploring the city, thank you for trusting the platform to connect you to a driver to get you there safely,” it said.
Uber acknowledged that its departure could affect customers who had relied on the service for transportation.
“We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience,” the company said.
The company also disclosed that its Help Center would remain available for a limited period to assist customers with outstanding issues following the shutdown.
“Our Help Center will be available until 23 September 2026 to help you with any final account queries,” Uber said.
Concluding its farewell message, the company thanked Nigerians for welcoming it into the country.
“Thank you for welcoming us into your city,” Uber said.
The announcement effectively ends Uber’s presence in Nigeria after more than a decade of providing app-based transportation services, beginning with its Lagos launch in 2014.
