The bye-election to determine the occupier of the Akoko North East/North West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives is underway.

Ife Ehindero is the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) but the words on the streets are that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has as much skin as the candidate – if not more – in the contest.

“This is the first election APC will be having in Ondo with Aiyedatiwa as Governor and based on how he came to power, all eyes are on him to see how well the party fares” SocietyNow.Ng gathered.

Aiyedatiwa was sworn in as the Governor of Ondo state on December 27, 2023 hours after the death of his predecessor, Rotimi Akeredolu.

He was the much vilified Deputy Governor hanging onto his seat by a thread – against the onslaught of political power mongers profiting from the prolonged illness of Akeredolu – before President Bola Tinubu’s intervention gave him a lifeline and fate did the rest.

SocietyNow.Ng’s checks revealed that Aiyedatiwa is not seen as a thoroughbred politician by hardcore players.

“His ability to effectively take charge of the party and come near Akeredolu’s giant leaps is being questioned in different quarters, a win in the Akoko bye-election will help put him on the pedestal to gaining trust” those who should know say.

The House of Representatives bye-election is underway in Ondo state today, Saturday, February 3, 2023.

Though Aiyedatiwa was a pronounced face on the campaign trail of the candidate, Ehindero – insiders insist the talks are that winning an election is beyond wearing party uniform and throwing often-used statements at electorates.

“The words are that a win in the Reps bye-election is more important to Aiyedatiwa than the candidate and even the party, especially because he is decorated with talks of interest in the next gubernatorial election” SocietyNow.Ng.

The off-cycle Ondo gubernatorial election is scheduled for September 21, 2024.

Attempts to scuttle Aiyedatiwa’s chances of becoming the candidate of the party resulted in his persecution when he was the Deputy Governor.

The threats and campaigns against his ambition have not stopped – but became more refined and downplayed when he became Governor, according to those in the know.

“So the outcome of the bye-election is very important for him because he would very much not want it to be used as an added campaign against his person” SocietyNow.Ng learned.
