Abubakar Sodangi, a Senator from Nasarawa has provided a solution to the incessant problems, violent crimes involving herdsmen.

Sodangi who served in the Senate between 1999 and 2007 insists the way out is to provide colonies for the Herdsmen in each state.

“Federal government should collaborate with the state government and allocate land to them” he stated during a chat on the issue Channels Television early morning show, Sunrise Daily.

“Anybody found grazing outside the colony would be seen as going against the law…” he added.

He explained violence involving migrating Fulani Herdsmen and their hosts’ communities is an agelong issue, maintaining the administration of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan experienced the same issue.

He waved away allegations that the presidency of Muhammadu Buhari is providing cover for the culprits.

Though he insists he is against killings and associated violence credited to the Herdsmen, Sodangi inferred unless the colonies are provided the problems would persist.

He did not proffer any other alternative solution.

The argument against the creation of colonies by the states for the herdsmen has roots in allegations it is a backdoor attempt to officially extend the reach of “Fulani fiefdoms”.

The herdsmen are doused in accusations of mass killings to protect their cows.

They are said to wander into farmlands at will to graze their cows and when met with resistance attack the farm owners or anyone that tries to stop them.

Footages of the havoc they wrecked on Benue community with over 100 persons slaughtered, including women and children have sparked off public angst against them.

The killing of two police officers on the heels of this attack and public declaration by the spokesperson for their association – Myet Allah – , that the Benue attack was carried out to protect cows only further enraged the public.

Nobody has been arrested for the killings in Benue, and neither person who admitted the attack was carried out to protect cows brought in for questioning.

The fact that President Buhari is a Fulani – by tribe – has resulted in interpretations that the state is providing cover for the aggressors.
