holding in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Shettima departed Abuja on Friday to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the G20 Leaders’ Summit holding in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The vice-president is standing in for the president following an invitation extended by President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently chairs the G20 group.
The summit, scheduled for November 22nd and 23rd at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, will bring together leaders of the world’s major economies, including representatives of the European Union, the African Union, and key global financial institutions. It is one of the most consequential gatherings of the year, with discussions expected to focus on global economic stability, development financing, climate commitments, and pathways to strengthen international cooperation at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
In a statement before his departure, Shettima noted that Nigeria’s participation reflects the administration’s commitment to deepening economic diplomacy and securing stronger partnerships with influential global actors. He added that conversations at the summit offer an opportunity to advance Nigeria’s interests across trade, investment, and infrastructure financing.
The vice-president is expected to engage with world leaders, hold bilateral meetings on the margins of the summit, and reiterate Nigeria’s position on key global development issues. His trip underscores the Tinubu administration’s push for a more assertive and strategic presence for Nigeria on the global stage.
