Family Requests Privacy As Beat Stops For Master Musician Akiin Shuga
announced the passing of the celebrated Nigerian live band maestro
The family of Akinloye Tofowomo, popularly known as Akiin Shuga, has announced the passing of the celebrated Nigerian live band maestro in New Brunswick, Canada.
In a statement signed by Femi Dare on behalf of the family, they expressed profound sorrow and total submission to the will of God, describing the late musician as a “revered music icon, Grandmaster, and Managing Director of Shuga Limb Foundation and Shuga Entertainment, Nigeria’s most prestigious live band.”
The statement said Akiin Shuga was more than a musician, portraying him as a custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance. For over three decades, he built a legacy of excellence on and off stage, redefining leadership in live band music through mastery, mentorship, and grace.
“To countless admirers at home and abroad, he was both an inspiration and an institution — a true king in his art,” the family noted.
They appealed for privacy as they come to terms with what they called an immeasurable loss, seeking space for quiet reflection and closure. “They wish for the space to find closure and to honour his life in the intimacy of loved ones and cherished memories,” the statement added.
The family said details of memorial observances would be communicated in due course, while appreciating friends, colleagues, and fans who have shared their condolences, prayers, and tributes.
“Akinloye Tofowomo’s legacy — through the Shuga Band and Shuga Entertainment — will continue to live on,” the statement said.
He is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and mother. The family concluded with a prayer that his “noble soul find eternal rest.”
