He was caught with his hand in the till in damning corruption case

A popular lawmaker has been convicted.

He is Farouk Lawan, the former Federal lawmaker from Kano State.

Farouk who represented the people of Bagwai/Shanono in the Green Chamber from 1991 till 2015 (Four terms of four years each) has been handed a seven years sentence.

The former lawmaker who served on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (APC) has been sent to prison in connection with the case that made him infamous.

He was caught with his hand in the till in a damning corruption case via a sting operation launched by Femi Otedola, the then Chief Executive Officer of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited.

Lawan who was the chairman of the adhoc committee handling fuel subsidy fraud probe – on behalf of the Federal House of Representatives – demanded $3million from Otedola to remove the name of his company from the probe in 2012.

Otedola who alleged blackmail launched a sting operation that caught Lawan on camera receiving initial payments of the bribe money – $50,000.

The disclosure resulted in a corruption investigation and prosecution of Lawan.

The trial resulted in Lawan’s conviction today, June 22, 2021 by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Apo, Abuja.

Justice Angella Otaluka, in the ruling delivered at the prolonged trial convicted Lawan on the three-count charge on which he was tried by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC).
