The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital Communications, Otega Ogra has declared that “despite political differences, many opposition leaders are beginning to acknowledge President Bola Tinubu’s stance on non-interference in the work of the other arms of government”.

Ogra made the declaration in response to the recent commendation former Senate President Bukola Saraki gave the 10th assembly led by Godswill Akpabio for probing the funding and approvals secured by the executive arm under the now questionable ways and means process of the Central Bank of Nigeria – with former Governor Godwin Emefiele in charge.

Saraki on February 22, 2024 wrote “Did you listen to the Senate deliberations today? What we witnessed in the Red Chamber underscores the vital role of legislative oversight and the importance of speaking truth, standing with the people, and fulfilling our constitutional roles.

Today’s inquiries were those that the 9th Senate should have pursued but evidently did not, resulting in the current repercussions for their inaction.

“It brought back memories of the 8th Senate’s insistence on transparency and accountability. I remember when we were asking for details of the foreign loan requests brought by the Buhari administration and were portrayed as enemies of the state and obstructive to national progress.

I must acknowledge the 10th Senate’s effort in even deliberating on these crucial issues.

“This moment stands as a powerful reminder that the legislative arm of government must effectively play its constitutional role at all times in the interest of the people they represent, despite the personal sacrifices that may need to be made. Only then will the public and the people truly benefit.

I sincerely hope we learn from the mistakes of the past.”

Highlighting the enabling environment provided by President Bola Tinubu’s abiding by the dictates of the constitution, Ogra penned an insight that reads “I have noticed that despite political differences, many opposition leaders are beginning to acknowledge President Bola Tinubu’s stance on non-interference in the work of the other arms of government. Many of them agree (some grudgingly, other in muted fashion) that he has been making the right decisions even though some may disagree on the “how”.

“Governors from different political parties were reported to have expressed surprise at the President’s non-interference in the judiciary during the various election cases. Similarly, his hands-off approach to the National Assembly’s work has been so evident that a former Senate President, who belongs to an opposition party, just praised the Senate in the quoted tweet below. By taking a stance on no executive overreach by the Executive Branch, President Tinubu @officialABAT is helping to strengthen our democracy and promote the development of stronger institutions.”

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital Communications went on to include a footnote that reads “President Tinubu’s administration is committed to collaboration, whether at the federal or sub-national level. It is time for all Nigerians, including both citizens and leaders, to work together for the betterment of the country, regardless of party affiliation, tribe, gender, religion, or any other differences. The need for unity is more pressing now than ever before.”
