Nursing Mothers Wait “Hellish” Hours For Babies’ Immunisation While Nurses Play Around At Ogun General Hospital

“Come early, if you don’t they will not be attended to you” nursing mothers- especially those who just gave birth – seeking to get immunisation vaccine for their babies at Ogun General Hospital, Ota are told.

And many heed the call, but usually to great sufferings.

The early callers from as early as 7.00 am or before are made to wait “hellish” hours before they are attended.

Mothers and their babies are said to be usually kept waiting for as long as four to five hours while the “nurses” play around in the name of gossips.

According to a source, “the nursing mothers are told to sit and wait till there are a “good numbers” to be attended to.

A witness said he took his wife for his baby to be given the immunisation vaccine and waited from 7.00 am till about 11.30 am before they were attended to.

According to the source, “we went early so we can take the first set of tally numbers and be attended to on time. The nurses came around 8.00 am and they just kept gossiping and playing up and down without attending to anybody. When we asked why, we were told they wanted a good numbers of people to be on ground before they start work!. They didn’t start giving the vaccine until well after 11 a.m’’.

Societynow gathered this is the normal at the General Hospital situated in Ota, Ogun state.

While the nurses play around and gossip, the nursing mothers struggle to attend to babies, especially new born unsettled by the unfamiliar – and by then – noisy environment.

Ironically societynow gathered the immunisation execrcise is not an everyday affair at the General Hospital, selected days including Thursday are earmarked for the “programme” – yet those who come are made to undergo excritiating wait.

And wait for this, the mothers are also enforce to pay little amounts totalling about N1000 (One Thousand Naira) – non receipt – for the exercise.
