New Video Tells Houses To Go As Lagos Continues Opening Of Drainage Channels

“We have served several contravention notices and enforcement”

It established that more houses, illegally built on water paths, will be demolished as the Lagos state government continues to open drainage channels in an intentional effort to combat flooding and related environmental issues.

A video released by Tokunbo Wahab, the commissioner for Environment and Water Resources made this clear.

Wahab released the video today- December 1, 2023- along with the explanation “A drone footage of the encroachment of the drainage channel on System 156 (fully built) Igbo-Efon to Ikota channel in Lekki. 

Red arrow indicator showing the extent of encroachment and total blockade and diversion of system 156 Into system 157 by the developers and property owners. All the structures were fully built on the setbacks and alignment which is clearly an alteration of the Drainage Master Plan along the area. 

We have served several contravention notices and enforcement will begin after the expiration of the contravention notices.”.

A top-level member of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration, Wahab on taking office on Monday, September 18, 2023, declared that his mandate is “to secure a clean, healthy and sustainable environment, that promotes tourism, boosts economic growth and enhances the overall well-being of the citizens”.

The Special Adviser on Education in the first term of Governor Sanwo-Olu has remained intentional in his revamping initiatives since then, insisting that “to keep Lagos clean, safe, and healthy, We must be deliberate in our approach”.
