Attorney-General Abubakar Malami is getting roasted.

This development is the direct fallout of his declaration that the decision by the Southern Governor to ban open grazing of cows is the same as prohibiting sales of spare parts in the north.

Malami made the declaration during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, May 19, 2021.

His comparison of the spare trading in the north and open grazing in the south which has resulted in massive loss of lives and properties in clashes between herders and farmers has sparked huge criticism.

“It is disingenuous to link a ban on open grazing to the constitutional right to the free movement of persons,

“The latter does not extend to the free movement of cattle, goats, sheep etc through farms with the attendant destruction of somebody’s harvest.” Stanbic IBTC founder Atedo Peterside stated in a report monitored by societynow.ng on thenationonlineng.net

“Of the many misadventures that define the regime of @Mbuhari, his Attorney-General, @MalamiSan, takes the cake.

“He is a special piece of willful nuisance. It takes considered intent to be so illiterate as Attorney-General”, ex- chairman of Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu decelare in the same report.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, one of the Governors who took the decision while expressing the strong opinion that “most unfortunate that the AGF is unable to distill issues as expected of a Senior Advocate” declared that “Clinging to an anachronistic model of animal husbandry, which is evidently injurious to the harmonious relationship between the herders and the farmers as well as the local populace, is wicked and arrogant.

“Comparing this anachronism, which has led to the loss of lives, farmlands and property, and engendered untold hardship on the host communities, with buying and selling of auto parts is not only strange. It, annoyingly, betrays a terrible mindset.

“Mr. Malami is advised to approach the court to challenge the legality of the Laws of the respective States banning open grazing and decision of the Southern Governor Forum taken in the interest of their people. We shall be most willing to meet him in Court.

“The decision to ban open grazing stays. It will be enforced with vigour.”

Airing his view, Reno Omokri the former aide of ex-president Goodluck Jonathan opined in a tweet “If Nigerians can’t do open grazing of pigs in the North, then local and foreign herdsmen can’t do open grazing of cows in the South. You should not condemn one without condemning the other, except you mean Southerners are second class citizens!”

These reactions are finer responses to the feedback on Malami’s comments which many deemed “illogical” and “unbecoming” of someone occupying his position.
Malami is the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice.
