How Gov Zulum Escaped 4 Assassination Attempts In 1 Year

Babagana Umara Zulum, the 52years old Governor of Borno State is unrelenting in the struggle to end the scourge of insecurity in his domain.

This stance has made him the target of Boko Haram and other infamous sects holding his state by the jugular.

The former commissioner who inherited the insecurity issue on his election as Governor in 2019 has been the target of four assassination attempts within a year.

The Governor whose birth date is August 25 suffered his first assassination attempt on July 29, 2020.

His convoy was attacked by Boko Haram on the Maiduguri – Damaturu highway.

The attack resulted in the death of five people including three policemen on his entourage.

The Governor escaped unhurt.

The next attempt to kill Zulum happened on September 26, 2020.

The Governor’s entourage was attacked by Boko Haram members near Lake Chad.

The assassination attempt recorded the highest body counts with the death of about 30 persons that included 14 police officers and four soldiers.

The gallantry of the security operatives protecting Zulum shielded him from harm.

And their alertness also saved the Governor from what would have turned into a devastating attack three days later.

On September 29, the Governor’s security team noticed a donkey bearing a “suspicious” package and shot at it.

The donkey exploded and Boka Haram members in ambush came surging out but were repelled by the Governor’s security team.

It was the only assassination attempt that the Governor’s convoy did not suffer any casualty with attackers suffering “heavily”.

The last public attempt to kill Zulum transpired on November 22, 2020.

His convoy was attacked on the way to an official engagement with government officials in Baga.

Zulum’s scheduled engagement was canceled as his convoy beat a retreat from the ambush by Boko Haram that resulted in the death of seven soldiers and two civilians.

Again, the gallantry of the Governor’s security team saved him from harm in the last recorded open assassination attempt against him.
