Kayode Fayemi, the former Governor of Ekiti state has explained his role at the 28th session of Conference of Parties (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Fayemi who is also former Minister provided the insight in a narrative that reads…

“In my capacity as the President of the Forum of Regions of Africa (FORAF), I participated in a panel discussion on “Raising Adaptation Finance in Africa by More than Double,” co-organised by the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), Africa Adaptation Initiative (AAI), and Africa Green Climate Fund National Designated Authority Network (AFDAN) at the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLGA) venue of the ongoing #COP28 in Dubai.

The session provided the opportunity to share perspectives and experiences on the challenges and opportunities for raising adaptation finance in Africa, one of the most vulnerable regions to the impacts of climate change.

The tendency at fora like this is often to focus on sovereigns or national governments with little or no coverage on subnational governments that bear the brunt firsthand of the impacts of climate change, such as rising sea levels, droughts, floods, and extreme weather events.

However, when we examine the scale of challenges and root causes at local levels, it becomes evident that any feasible and concrete plan to address these issues and the impacts of #climate change in Africa must include the experiences and perspectives of subnational entities. This is why it is promising and strategic for UCLGA Africa, PACJA, AAI, and AFDAN to have taken this path by bringing together different subnational stakeholders at #COP28.

Alongside my colleagues, I had the opportunity to contribute to the conversation about the current state and trends of adaptation finance in Africa and the gaps and challenges in meeting the adaptation needs and priorities of the continent. This discussion also included concrete actions and recommendations for improving the quantity and quality of adaptation finance for Africa and ensuring it reaches the most vulnerable and marginalised groups and sectors.”

The former Governor shared the details in a social media post he made on December 3, 2023.
