In a pulsating final at the Stade Olympique in Rabat on Saturday night, Nigeria’s Super Falcons staged a remarkable comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 — clinching their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title — just as President Bola Tinubu had urged them to do.

Hours before the encounter, President Tinubu had sent a heartfelt message to the team, calling on them to “go for the tenth” and bring the trophy back home.

“You will finish strong by the Grace of God. Go for the tenth! Bring the trophy home…I look forward to receiving the team, the trophy, and the officials in Abuja”, the President wrote to the team.

That call seemed to echo through the Falcons’ performance as they clawed back from a two-goal deficit to deliver one of the most dramatic victories in their storied history.

The match began on a tough note for Nigeria. The Atlas Lionesses took the lead in the 12th minute through Ghizlane Chebbak and doubled it 12 minutes later via Sanaa Mssoudy — leaving the Falcons stunned and trailing 2-0.

But after the break, Nigeria came alive.

Esther Okoronkwo pulled one back in the 63rd minute from the penalty spot after a VAR review, reigniting belief on the Nigerian bench. Moments later, Okoronkwo turned provider — delivering a fine assist to Tosin Ijamilusi, who made it 2-2 in the 71st minute.

With the stadium tense and the clock ticking, substitute Jennifer Echegini found herself in the right place at the right time — latching onto a perfectly delivered set-piece from Okoronkwo to slot home the winner in the 88th minute.

The Falcons’ gritty fightback was not just a testament to their class and experience, but also a stirring response to the President’s rallying cry — a night when football answered the call of country.

Watch the match highlights as the Super Falcons write history again, answering the nation’s call on the continent’s biggest stage.
