Tinubu Halts G20, AU–EU Trips To Focus On Security, Orders Fresh Deployment To Kwara
Reiterating his stance on the abducted schoolgirls
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has postponed his scheduled trips to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, choosing instead to await further security briefings on the kidnapped schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.
Tinubu was expected to depart Abuja on Tuesday for the 20th G20 Summit of leaders in South Africa and later proceed to Angola for the 7th AU-EU Summit. However, the president suspended his departure after receiving reports of the escalating security concerns in the two states.
The president also responded to a request from the Kwara State governor by directing the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area of the state. He instructed the police to intensify efforts to track down the bandits who attacked the church and disrupted worship.
Tinubu now awaits detailed reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi on his behalf to convey the government’s sympathy and assess the situation firsthand. He is also expecting briefings from the police and the Department of State Services on the attack in Kwara.
Reiterating his stance on the abducted schoolgirls, the president ordered all security agencies to do everything possible to rescue the 24 students taken by bandits in Kebbi and ensure their safe return home.
The directive underscores what the presidency described as Tinubu’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of Nigerians over international engagements, even at the highest diplomatic levels.
