Ogun LG Chairmen Resort To “Self-Help” To Keep Councils Running

Local Government chairmen keen to make a mark in Ogun state have adopted an unusual strategy.

SocietyNow.Ng gathered that faced with limited funds, the council administrators have resorted to pleading with stakeholders outside of government for support.

“Those who are really keen to perform visit indigenes or related stakeholders in their areas and plead with such persons to undertake a project, even if it means that the sponsor will oversee the execution of such initiatives” SocietyNow.Ng gathered.

Those in the know claim for the proposal to have weight, the chairmen usually go to such meetings with “senior members of staff”.

“It doesn’t matter where the targetted sponsor is resident, what matters is if he or she is likely to support the council” SocietyNow.Ng learned.

Insiders disclosed that many local government chairmen in Ogun state are resorting to this self-help approach faced with the little they can achieve in the face of the unresolved issue of local government autonomy that makes the state governments in charge of their allocations from the federal government.

The state governments across the federations have hijacked the purse of the local governments, spending the funds “on behalf” of the councils.

“The thing is that the council chairmen that have resorted to this self-help approach in Ogun state have simply refused to be bench warmers. They want their administrations to be known for something” SocietyNow.Ng learned.

Increasing numbers of council chairmen are said to be embracing this approach in the name of not “troubling” Dapo Abiodun with all that is needed in their councils.
