Victor Emeruwa, the Chief Executive Officer of the Sun Media Foundation, says there are increasing opportunities ahead of the 2030 deadline for attaining Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The SDGs also known as Global Goals are a grouping of universal aims to address the dire environmental, political, and economic challenges afflicting the world.

World leaders fashioned the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015 at a historic Summit of the United Nations.

It was borne out of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), broken into 169 aims.

Grouped under the five themes of People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnerships, some of the targets include to end poverty and hunger everywhere; to combat inequalities within and among countries; to build peaceful, just and inclusive societies; to protect human rights and promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls; and to ensure the lasting protection of the planet.

Speaking on the journey so far, Emeruwa who was a resource person at the recent 2-day capacity-strengthening workshop aimed at tooling the media on reporting climate change pointed out the increasing opportunities ahead of the deadline.

“As we approach the 2030 deadline for SDGs, there is a widening space and opportunities for experts and specialists that can provide local, national and global solutions to all the theme of the SDGs” he explained at the media capacity enhancing workshop organized by Sterling One Foundation and its partners including Microsoft Nigeria, Sterling Bank, The Sun Media Foundation, Oando Foundation, and Coca Cola.

The Sun Media Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, who insisted on the need for responsible media advocacy on climate issues, urged committed involvement in taking advantage of the widening opportunities.

“What can you do? Jump in and stay in” Emeruwa advised while making his presentation on “The Role Of Media In Climate Action”.

Further declaring that “causing change to happen in the life of ordinary people is the biggest gain in the development reporting space”, he passionately advocated unceasing reporting and regular training as part of the advocacy in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals at the 2-day workshop themed ‘Achieving the SDGs: Strengthening Media Capacities for Effective Reportage’.

The Media Capacity Building Workshop is part of the response to the global challenge of climate change, which poses a significant risk to human health and well-being, affecting various aspects of society, economics, and the natural world by Sterling One Foundation and its partners its partners including Microsoft Nigeria, Sterling Bank, The Sun Media Foundation, Oando Foundation, and Coca Cola.
