Wale Ojetimi, a passionate canvasser for a safer world says it is time to call out all those contributing to the destruction of the environment.

Ojetimi, the Chief Executive Officer at Amatropics Newslive, made the call at the second of the recent 2-day capacity-strengthening workshop aimed at tooling the media to glare the hitting hard climate change crisis afflicting all.

The hybrid-event-themed ‘Achieving the SDGs: Strengthening Media Capacities for Effective Reportage’ was put together by Sterling One Foundation and its partners including Microsoft Nigeria, Sterling Bank, The Sun Media, Oando Foundation, and Coca Cola.

Ojetimi who spoke on the topic “Communication Needs Assessment for Climate Action Reporting” raised concerns about the far-reaching effects of plastic waste on the environment.

Pointing out that “one of the most pressing environmental issues of our generation is plastic pollution” and is “aggravated in Nigeria by poor waste management, Ojetimi while acknowledging efforts to tackle the menace declared that ” a more proactive and passionate initiative from the society itself is needed to drive a sustainable change.”

“it is time for all of us, the media inclusive, to join hands in calling out the creators of this monsters – the producers, users and manufacturers of plastics to start taking responsibility for the existential destruction on the environment” Ojetimi declared in canvassing for a radical approach to stem what he labeled the “plethora of detrimental consequences which stems from our usage of plastic”.

Checks revealed that because Plastics do not undergo degradation, they affect the fertility of the soil and negatively impact food production, Plastics are also major enhancers of flooding when they clog pipes, drains and channels of water.

But more harrowing is the explanation on goggle that ” Plastic in the oceans may also interfere with the oceans capacity to absorb and sequester carbon dioxide, thus creating another pathway through which plastic pollution contributes to accelerate climate change.”

Sterling One Foundation, the lead organiser of the 2-day “‘Achieving the SDGs: Strengthening Media Capacities for Effective Reportage’ capacity building workshop remains at the forefront of keeping the environment safe with initiatives like its Beach Clean-Up exercises.
