Why There Is Tight Security At Awujale’s Family House
joined his ancestors on July 13, 2025
Tight security has been observed at the Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode family residence of Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, who joined his ancestors on July 13, 2025.
Military personnel reportedly took control of the area in the early hours of the morning, according to eyewitnesses in the neighborhood.
This development comes amid speculation that the late monarch may be laid to rest at the location today, in line with Islamic rites.
If this happens, Oba Adetona would become the first traditional ruler of his stature to forgo long-established customs and traditions in transitioning to the ancestral realm.
The late Awujale was the sponsor of a bill that allows traditional rulers to be buried in accordance with their professed faith. The bill has since become law and has been applied in select cases—but never involving a monarch of such prominence.
The Awujale stool is one of the most revered in Ijebuland, steeped in customs and age-long traditions. Burial rites associated with the position have historically followed strictly defined procedures rooted in cultural heritage.
The heightened security presence at the family home and surrounding area is believed to be a precautionary measure to maintain order and prevent any attempt to enforce traditional rites in defiance of the monarch’s religious wishes
