Why Gov Otu Canceled Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon
“This decision was not an easy one”
Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River has announced the cancellation of the 2025 Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon, citing the prevailing security situation across the country.
The governor said the decision, though difficult, was taken in the best interest of residents, athletes, and visitors who would have participated in the annual event.
In a statement on Thursday, Otu said he reached the decision after a “careful review” of the national security climate.
He noted that while the marathon has grown into a major attraction that commands passion and anticipation, public safety must take precedence.
“This decision was not an easy one, especially considering the passion, planning, and anticipation that this event inspires every year,” he said. “However, the safety of our people, our athletes, and our visitors must always come first.”
The governor expressed regret over the inconvenience the cancellation may cause organisers, partners, and participants, acknowledging the extensive preparation that typically goes into hosting the marathon.
Otu assured residents and stakeholders that the event will return “stronger, safer, and better organised” in subsequent editions, backed fully by the state government.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to positioning Cross River as a destination defined by peace, natural beauty, and excellence, adding that responsible decisions that protect lives will continue to guide the state’s actions.
“We will continue to take responsible decisions that protect lives while elevating our state on the global stage,” he said, thanking residents for their understanding and continued support.
