The Story Behind The Story Of Why Fans, Associates Are Disappointed In Gbenga Daniel Over Drama Of Quitting Politics
Charles Oyelesi
It is obvious. A lot of people are disappointed with a former governor of Ogun state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.
And the reason for this simple – he just behaved very contrary to type.
A successful businessman, the former governor lived up to the definition of professional in politics, until the last couple of days.
The shining light of the People’s Democratic Party announced his resignation from the PDP and party politics.
And barely twenty-four hours later, Daniel held a meeting with his followers where they rejected his ‘’quitting’’ party politics and ‘’pressured’’ the former governor to lead them into the opposition All Progressives Congress.
This development is based on the background that Daniel and supporters worked for the emergence of Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress to emerge as the Governor-Elect of Ogun state.
The former governor’s reaction of ‘’My People have spoken’’ in the face of pressure to lead his followers to the ruling APC – after he has announced resignation from PDP and party politics – sparked off the widespread disappointment in the respected politician.
‘’It smacks of kindergarten politicking in the bid to defect to another party’’ was chorused all over town.
Multiple sources affirm Daniel too cerebral and too much a calculated risk taker for kind of drama playing out.
‘’The Gbenga Daniel that I respect would have met with his followers before the announcement of resignation from party and retirement from party politics and not the other way round. He consults far and wide and ensures the protection of the interests of his loyalists before taking decisions and that is why I find this drama playing out very disappointing’’ a source stated.
Societynow.ng’s checks revealed that a lot of the fans and associates of the former governor share the same sentiments.
Those who should know insist the unflattering drama over the development has obviously pulled the drug under any plot of defection to the ruling party by the former PD chieftain.
‘’I guess now the followers would find their way to the APC on their own’’ a source stated.
Societynow.ng confirmed that quite a number of influential friends and associates of the former governor have advised him to stick to the initial plan outlined in his announcement.
‘’The argument is that respect for him and his influence would increase if he is not associated with any political party and continues to impact on lives with his gateway foundation’’ a source stated.
‘’He would naturally be sought out for support by politicians on all sides and end up as a major influence in the decision-making process in his state’’ another source threw in.
