Ogun State House of Assembly Speaker Suraj Adekunbi and Tolu Odebiyi, the Chief Of Staff to Incumbent Ibikunle Amosun are firmly in the race to become the next governor of Ogun state.

Emerging details have it that the duo go “toe to toe” as Governor Amosun mulls over whether or not to pick his successor from Yewa (Ogun West).

“They are the leading contenders in Amosun’s consideration of candidates from that zone” a source explained.

Adekunbi and Odebiyi are said to be involved in intense underground campaign, particularly in their zone to become the next Governor of Ogun state.

Amosun at a time gave his “word” in public that his successor would emerge from the zone ye to produce a governor in the state.

But political realities have placed that particular assurance on “shaky ground”.

Contenders with very robust political structures – even amongst Amosun’s key men – from other zones with greater vote margin than Yewa have emerged and appear very serious with their ambitions.

Governor Amosun is said to be mulling how to handle the situation without losing his hold on the politics of the state.

“So abandoning the promise of a successor coming from Yewa is not out of the equation but while he keeps that option in view, Adekunbi and Odebiyi top the list of possible candidate” an insider explain.

The two aspirants are said to go toe to toe on qualities that have made them the top men in Amosun’s book from their axis – especially as regards fierce loyalty to the Governor.

However on the streets, there are those who believe the speaker has the slight edge of more visibility with his position – and ongoing execution of his gubernatorial campaign.

“That’s a point which in fairness fate worked against Odebiyi because as CSO to an incumbent governor, he can’t afford the luxury of freedom available to Adekunbi as Speaker” a keen observer pointed out.
