The Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, and the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, have thrown their weight behind Senator Gbenga Daniel’s push for the creation of a new state from the old Ijebu Province.

This move has been hailed as a major breakthrough in the long-standing demand for a new state in Nigeria’s South-West region.

The old Ijebu Province remains the only one among Nigeria’s original 24 provinces yet to evolve into a state. Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East, has presented a comprehensive memorandum to the Senate supporting the state’s creation. The proposed Ijebu State would comprise nine local government areas carved out from Ogun State.

The proposed Ijebu State boasts significant economic potential, with existing infrastructure such as the rapidly expanding Flowergate Industrial Estate, an international airport, and potential for a deep-sea port. The region is also rich in natural resources, including tar sands, agricultural estates, and various mineral deposits.

The Awujale of Ijebuland emphasized the importance of unity in achieving the goal of creating a new state. “Ijebu and Remo people are one,” he declared. A technical committee comprising distinguished personalities from both Ijebu and Remo has been established to advance the initiative.

The creation of Ijebu State is expected to promote balanced regional development and bring about economic growth and prosperity to the region. With the backing of prominent traditional rulers and stakeholders, Senator Gbenga Daniel’s push for a new state from the old Ijebu Province has gained significant momentum.
