Obasa Declares For Reps Seat After 23 Years In Lagos Assembly, Names Successor
signaling a major shift in his political journey
Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has formally declared his intention to contest for the Agege Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives under the All Progressives Congress, APC, signaling a major shift in his political journey after more than two decades in the state legislature.
Obasa made the declaration yesterday before party leaders, stakeholders, loyal members, and supporters, saying his decision followed “two decades and three years” of representing the people of Agege Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly and over a decade of service as Speaker.
According to him, “I formally declared my intention to contest for the Agege Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives under our great party, the APC.”
The veteran lawmaker described the move as the beginning of “another chapter” in his legislative career, stressing that the decision was borne out of a desire to continue serving the people on a broader platform.
“After two decades and three years of representing the good people of Agege Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, and serving for over a decade as Speaker, I believe the time has come to begin another chapter in my legislative journey,” he said.
Obasa noted that his ambition was not a sudden one, insisting it was inspired by a renewed commitment to expand his service delivery beyond the state level.
“This decision was not made lightly. It is driven by a renewed commitment to continue serving our people on a broader platform, while building on the experience, relationships, and dedication that have defined my years in public service,” he stated.
He also expressed gratitude to residents of Agege for what he described as consistent trust and confidence since 2003.
“I remain profoundly grateful to the people of Agege for the trust, support, and confidence they have consistently reposed in me since 2003,” Obasa added.
In what appeared to be a strategic succession plan for his current political structure, the Speaker urged APC members and Agege residents to support Hon. Kola Egunjobi for Agege Constituency I seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly, alongside Azeez Oladapo Yusuf Ninolowo for Agege Constituency II.
“As we move forward, I urge our party faithful and the good people of Agege to extend the same support to my brother, Hon. Kola Egunjobi, as he aspires to represent Agege Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, as well as Azeez Oladapo Yusuf Ninolowo for Agege Constituency II,” he said.
Obasa emphasized that the broader objective remains the advancement of Agege and Lagos State, calling for unity within the APC ahead of the political transition.
“Our collective focus must remain the continued growth, stability, and development of Agege and Lagos State as a whole,” he said, expressing confidence that “with unity, loyalty, and unwavering commitment to the ideals of our party, we will continue to achieve even greater progress together.”
With his declaration, political attention is expected to intensify around Agege, one of Lagos’ influential political strongholds, as Obasa seeks to transfer his long-standing grassroots influence from the state assembly to the National Assembly.
“The journey continues,” Obasa declared.
