The burial of Prince Olumuyiwa Adewunmi Babington Ashaye, the man many who met him – and those that didn’t – acknowledged made tremendous impacts here and there was concluded on Friday, October 22 in Ogere Remo, Ogun State.

Friday’s event brought to an end the funeral rites of the earthly journey that began on July 30, 1933.

Societynow.ng brings interesting bits and pieces from the lifetime that nourished many that came into contact with it until it breathed the last on August 12, 2021.

…Prince Olumuyiwa Adewunmi Babington Ashaye born at the Massey Street Hospital, Ita-Faji, Lagos was the first child of His Royal Highness Oba Alfred Obafuwa Babington Ashaye, the Ologere of Ogere Remo, Ogun State.

…Prince Olumuyiwa, the only child of his mother, Olori Omo-Oba Comfort Orebowale Babington- Ashaye (nee Ademoye) was born after a 10year wait. He, however, has 15 siblings.

…He got the nickname “Terrible Ashus” for his boxing skill at St Gregory College, Lagos where he was a formidable member of the boxing club. He dropped the sport based on pleas from his mother.

…Prince Babington Ashaye was the web of interconnectivity among family and friends until he died. He took the role of the firstborn very seriously by staging a new year party every first Saturday to help family and friends keep tabs on one another till he died among other efforts he constantly made to make every do good in their undertakings.

…The serious mind who worked briefly at Barclay’s Bank DCO (now Union Bank) after he left secondary school – between 1955 to 1957) was able to speak the languages of different generations and was such a helping hand that “Bros Olu” became how he was addressed by even those 20years younger.

…He qualified as a Chartered Secretary and Chartered Accountant in England while undergoing further studies. It was during this period he forged a friendship very close pal, Bode Shebanjo

…Prince Babington-Ashaye returned to Nigeria in 1970. After working with Akintola Williams & Co and British Petroleum (BP), he set up Ashaye Far East Line (AFEL) a Nigeria based agency for AFEA (Hong-Kong based shipping line)

…Ashaye Far East Line Limited was the first shipping company to have a terminal concession inside Tincan Island Port. And it was until recently that customs stopped using “Ashaye Jetty” as the name for all containers cleared from private terminals that now have concessions inside Tincan Island Ports.

…Very business-minded, Prince Babington Ashaye was not just a shipper, he was also a property developer and investor. He invested as part-owner of a Chinese Restaurant on Ikorodu road, Lagos called Eko Chinese Restaurant among other things.

…On the religious side, he is affirmed to be God-fearing and a lover of the book of psalms.

A thoroughbred Anglican, “Bros Olu” was an Altar Boy at St Gregory College and later worshipped at the All Saints Anglican Church Yaba Lagos before settling at St Jude Anglican Church Omole Estate, Phase 1 was a very active worshiper till he passed on.

…A Lover of simple pleasures, Prince Babington- Ashaye found great comfort in country music and delight in the songs of Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi.
And he was a lover of good food and particularly fond of “Eja Yoyo”.

…He lived a life dedicated to taking on challenges, standing firm, and impacting on his environment, and never joked with the family bond. Family – immediate and extended – was very important to him according to the testimonies shared at his Service of Songs and Evening of Tributes.
