Gov Ayo Fayose Agrees Not To Demolish Mosques Built In Filling Stations As Part Of Compromise With Muslim Leaders Over Protests Rocking State

Governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose has backed down on decision to demolish mosques built within the premises of petrol stations.

The decision comes after a parley with Muslim leaders at the Government House in Ado Ekiti.

Prior to the parley the Muslim community in Ekiti state has threatened to make the state ungovernable for the Fayose should he demolish the earmarked mosques.

There had been open protests on and offline against the governor – including street rallies.

One of the affected mosques was built by petroleum dealer in Ekiti Suleiman Akinbami who donated it to the Muslim Community.

At the parley to resolve the matter, Governor Fayose declares is decision is premised on the need to protect people of Ekiti state irrespective of religion.

‘’what happens if there is a fire outbreak…the mosque is attended by a large number of people, we just want to protect them’’ he says.

He however gave a conduction for calling off the demolition of the mosques – they will hence forth be used as private places of worship.

The Muslim Delegation to the peace meeting was led by the President General of the League of Imams and Alfa for South-West, Delta and Edo States, Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere Bello.

Also in attendance were the President of Supreme Council For Islamic Affairs, Ekiti State, Alh. Yakubu Sanni, and the coordinator of the National Council of Muslim Youths Organisations, Ekiti, Mr. Tajudeen Ahmed.
