Detty December: Lagos Issues Waterfront Safety Tips For A Safe, Happy Celebration
a reminder to residents and visitors to stay safety conscious while enjoying
As Lagos slips fully into Detty December mode, with beaches buzzing, boat rides increasing, and waterfronts alive with festive energy, the Ministry of Waterfront Development (MWID) has issued a reminder to residents and visitors to stay safety conscious while enjoying the season.
The advisory comes amid heightened holiday activities along lagoons, beaches, and coastal corridors, where crowds traditionally swell during the yuletide. Authorities say while the season is meant for relaxation and fun, it also comes with risks if basic safety rules are ignored.
Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Dayo Bush Alebiosu, urged Lagosians to remain alert, especially around water bodies, noting that accidents during festive periods are often avoidable. “Please remember the important waterfront safety tips: be mindful when visiting waterfront areas, especially during high tide or period of heavy wave activity; use only authorized or properly equipped jetties for any boat travel; avoid night time swimming; and do not board unregistered or unsafe boats,” he said.

Boat users were advised to follow the rules, and parents and guardians were reminded of their responsibility to supervise children. “Teach children basic waterfront safety and ensure they are supervised at all times when near water,” Alebiosu emphasized.
Beyond personal safety, the government also called on residents to help protect the coastal environment by reporting suspicious activities such as illegal dredging or unsafe waterfront structures to the relevant authorities.
“Report any suspicious activity such as illegal dredging or unsafe waterfront structures to MWID or the nearest relevant authority. Your safety remains our top priority. Together, we can enjoy the season while protecting our beautiful coastal environment,” the popular name in grassroots politics added.
Officials insist the message is not to dampen the festive spirit but to ensure lives and property are protected during one of the busiest seasons of the year.

According to the commissioner, safety around Lagos waterways is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation from residents, operators, and visitors alike.
As the celebrations peak, the state says it remains committed to keeping waterfront areas safe and orderly, stressing that while the lagoon may not have a voice, collective action can help prevent avoidable tragedies. “Our lagoon cannot speak but we can act,” the commissioner concluded.
The government, through the Senior cabinet member, wished residents a joyful, peaceful, and safe holiday season, urging everyone to celebrate responsibly while preserving Lagos’ vibrant coastal environment.
