Information about the behind scene moves to determine who becomes the next Speaker of the Ogun state House of Assembly has started seeping out.

Details have it that loyalists of Ladi Adebutu, the Gubernatorial candidate of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the March 11 governorship election in Ogun state appear to be playing a major role.

SocietyNow.Ng gathered that, all the eleven lawmakers-elect on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party have adopted a posture that has broken the ranks of the members-elect in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

SocietyNow.Ng gathered that the PDP legislators-elect – loyalists to Adebutu – are backing one of the APC contenders to become the next Speaker.

Elemide

“The talks are that Adebutu’s men are backing Elemide Oludaisi of the APC to become the next Speaker of Ogun House of Assembly. Their support, combined with some other persons within the rank of APC lawmakers-elect, gives Elemide a simple majority as things stand” SocietyNow.Ng gathered.

Elemide is from Odeda area of Ogun state and is up against familiar foe, Olakunle Oluomo for the position of Ogun Speaker.

Oluomo, the Speaker of the immediate past Ogun Assembly is believed to be the preference of Governor Abiodun and his men for continuity and balance in the holding of political positions across regions.

“The major thing working against Elemide is that he is from Odeda where the Ogun APC party chairman is from as well as the Senator representing Ogun Central. Stakeholders against Elemide’s ambition insist the Speaker of the State House of Assembly can not come from the same area” SocietyNow.ng learned.

Incidentally, Oluomo the alternative being thrown up beat Elemide to the same position in the election to determine the Speaker of the immediate past Ogun State Assembly.

“So, there is a personal twist to the contest as well” according to those in the know.

Oluomo

The added digs by SocietyNow.Ng revealed that Elemide was so confident of securing the position if the inauguration of the Ogun Assembly had held on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, that he already put arrangements for a post-event celebration.

The election to determine Speaker and other principal officers of the Assembly would have held after the inauguration of the House but Governor Abiodun was not at hand to make the proclamation.

The Governor opted to attend the inauguration of the National Assembly.

Abiodun’s move forced a shift in the date of the inauguration of the Ogun State House of Assembly to Tuesday, June 20, 2023.

“If all things stand, Elemide backed by the block votes of the PDP members-elect and some of his party men in APC is the man to beat but in politics, five minutes is a lot not to talk of a whole week” SocietyNow.Ng learned.
