Dangote To Deduct Covid-19 Stay At Home Period From Workers Salary?
Eniola Adeniyi
A trending document indicates staff of Dangote Group – owned by one of the nation’s biggest employers of labor Aliko Dangote – won’t be getting their salaries for the period they were forced to sit at home in the fight against Covid-19 – even as a form of economic safety neither from their employer.
The Government Federal Government imposed a stay at home order in Lagos and Ogun States and the federal capital territory Abuja for about a month to prevent a spread of the Pandemic.
Some other states followed suit to complement the Federal Government’s effort in keeping the country state.
While Federal and State Governments in the affected areas have started paying workers the usual salary for the “forced sit at home period”, to enable them to cater to daily needs, some private companies have balked.
Dangote group appears to fall into this category based on a leaked internal memo.
The mega enterprise informed staff the period would be considered as annual leave and deductions would be made from the salary of workers by the number of days the forced sit at home exceeded their annual leave.
” In layman’s term the Dangote Group has told staff it is not under any obligation and will not pay any worker for not working irrespective of the circumstances” a source pointed out.
Official sources at Dangote Group are , however, credited with claims that the leaked document is “fake”.
