+ my plans to surpass Michael Jackson

Johnny Fresh real names Temiloluwa Ayodele- son of celebrated herbal slimmer, Quincy Ayodele has hit the music scene. And he is doing this in an unusual manner- he has over 200 songs on hand. The United States of America returnee and promoter of the brand of music he calls ‘Afro Hip Pop’ talks about his mission, vision and circumstances surrounding his foray into the music industry in this chat.

Que: How did you become involved with music?

Ans: I have always had great love for music. Since when I was young, I started with listening to Shina Peters, michael jackson and all that- but my parents insisted I got a first degree, because education is fundamental in any thing for success in life. So, I got mine in computer engineering from the University of Maryland in the United States and graduated last year. After I graduated, I gave my degree to my parents and told them I have done what you wanted- it is now time to pursue my dream, here I am.

Que: How did your parent react to that?

Ans: They support me now. When I first wanted to go into music they were like- you know, why music. But they agreed after
Johnny Fresh seeing the seriousness and my passion for it. Now they support the dream all through.

Que: And how has it been combining the dream and studies- before you reached this stage?

Ans: It’s been a been fun. I have used all the past years to prepare. Record quite a number of songs and study the terrain. You’ll be surprised by how many songs I have.

Que: Ok surprise me, you have like how many?

Ans: I have over 200 recorded songs- done over the years. I produce them- do the beats and all that and I also have a producer in US called CD Cerock, he is a very talented guy. I also rap with a group in the US called End Up City. It’s nice over there, but Nigeria is where magic happens.. I am a song writer too. I write my songs. Once the inspiration comes, I put pen to paper. It is also a plus that I have a studio of my own at home.

Que: Any major performances before now?

Ans: Majorly when I was in America. I performed in Las Vegas, New York, New Jersey and Miami. In 2009, I was on the Koko mansion and produced their theme songs. I have also done one or two performances since I came back here in march, but they are private stuffs ( he shows the videos of some beach parties he performed at, shirt off and sporting Tatoos)

Que: What’s with the Tatoos?

Ans: They are just stuff I love. There are two. One is symbolical, in memory of my grandmother and the other- just for the fun of it.

Que: The music industry in Nigeria is very competitive, what would set you apart?

Ans: Basically my originality- my charisma, swagger and style of music. My style of music is not based in Nigeria because I was not raised in Nigeria. It is a mixture of American and Nigerian flavour. The beats and lyrics are also different.

Que: How will you classify your brand of music?

Ans: I would label it Afro hip hop, because you can play it anywhere. You can take it to America and play it and even in Nigeria, you feel at home with it. It is entertaining- with messages and female oriented.

Que: Female oriented? Like a ladies man, lover boy kind of a thing?

Ans: Yeah ( laughs) My friends call me ladies man you know ( still laughing)..actually I have this thing for women- kind of respect and desire to protect them. May be because I grew in the midst of women. I am the only son of three women.

Que: What do you make of the Nigerian music scene ?

Ans: There are a lot of artistes in Nigeria and music widely accepted; there is no street you get to, where you don’t get someone singing one song or the other. And it is a vibrant industry
Yes it is. It’s just like how Jamaican music took over all over the world. Now, everyone listens to Jamaican songs. It’s fast becoming like that in Nigeria. Imagine a Wizkid being signed by Konvict Muzik record label, and P-Square having a video with Rick Ross. That means the industry is growing bigger. It’s now becoming very competitive.

Que: What is your target?

Ans: I’m heading to the top. To be the best at what I do. Really, I want to be listed among great musicians and producers like Don Jazzy, D’banj, MI, Naeto C etc. I have enough music in the bank. Though, I don’t have an official album yet, I’m trying to organise a listening party soon for people to come and feel the kind of music I make.

Que: Who will you love to surpass and how soon are you looking at releasing an album?

Ans: Releasing an album- am looking at within a year. The person am looking at surpassing ? Well that’s myself and may be michael jackson!

Que: Surpassing michael Jackson is huge- how do you plan to do that?

Ans: Simple by keeping faith with my dream…putting all I have and more to make it huge. And God’s blessing.

Que: You came back over six months ago- how has the acceptance been like?

Ans: I’ll say encouraging despite the little challenges in terms of finances which is general and other related stuff. I have conviction that there is a huge potential here.

Que: With no record label in sight, Where is the bulk of your financing coming from?

Ans: From my parents and myself. My parents support what I do because they believe in me. I appreciate them so much. That is definitely very encouraging for me.

Que: You are a Mommas boy so to speak?

Ans: (laughs) I am a mommas boy ooo..that is in terms of getting support for what I do. But I am also independent in my thinking and self driven towards achieving my goal.

Que: Your going travelling abroad, what neccessitated it?

Ans: I was born and raised in Lagos. I went to Corona Primary School, then spent one year in Bowen College after which I moved to America.

Initially, I went to America when I was eight but moved finally at age 11. I actually didn’t want to travel abroad, because I remembered I kicked against it because I was settled here and had friends back then as a youngster. But it wasn’t a decision for me to make. But in all the years I spent abroad I didn’t feel at home like I do here when I come home. It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy my stay over there- but America wasn’t Nigeria.

Que: Any serious relationship?

Ans: I am a young guy. Single and what else- available.

Que: Do you have any favourite Nigerian musicians?

Ans: I do. There is Wizkid. The guy is very talented. I had the opportunity of meeting him in the U.S two weeks ago; Banky W is talented as well. My favourite rapper is MI. And a host of others.

Que: How old are you?

Ans: I am between 18 and 26 depending on who is asking. ( Laughs) I love to keep people guessing about my age.

Que: What inspires you?

Ans: My inspiration ultimately is from God. He has been there for me and has kept me alive till this very day, and I pray that He continues to. But to work, I prefer solitude- being alone by myself. It’s the best environment for me to function.

Que: Finally any particular record label you are looking at working with?

Ans: Any one that is good enough to appreciate my talent and share my conviction for my dream.
