Army Refutes Claims Of Cult Shooting Inside Ojo Military Cantonment
that gunmen shot and killed a civilian
The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that gunmen shot and killed a civilian inside the Ojo Military Cantonment in Lagos.
In a statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 81 Division, the Army clarified that the incident did not take place within the military facility as claimed but occurred near a junction close to the Mammy Market abattoir gate on 18 October 2025.
According to the statement, the shooting was linked to suspected cult-related activities that resulted in the death of one person identified as Rilwan Adekunle. The Army explained that its standby team responded swiftly to a distress call and evacuated the victim to the Ojo Cantonment Medical Centre, which was the nearest medical facility.
“Tragically, the victim was pronounced dead by the medical team,” the statement read. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased.”
Lieutenant Colonel Yahaya urged the public and media outlets to verify information with relevant authorities before spreading unconfirmed reports, warning that misinformation could cause unnecessary tension and misunderstanding.
