Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom says the state has recorded remarkable growth in infrastructure, human capacity and social welfare in its 38 years of existence, adding that his administration is determined to shift focus from oil dependence to agriculture and tourism.

In a broadcast to mark the anniversary, Eno said the state has transformed from “a glorified village” at creation in 1987 to “the destination of choice and the nation’s best kept secret.”

He noted that Uyo, the capital city, now boasts of modern road networks, elegant housing estates and Ibom Air, which has become a symbol of excellence in the aviation sector.

The governor highlighted strides in sports, healthcare, security, and rural development.

He said his government has completed or initiated 771 kilometres of roads across the three senatorial districts, with more to be commissioned, including the 15.13km Ikot Otomo–Azumini Road.

The Governor added that the recently launched Akwa Ibom Security Trust Fund would strengthen partnerships with the private sector and security agencies to sustain peace and safety.

Eno also unveiled plans for a 350-bed Ibom International Hospital, the Arise Elders Care Centre, model schools, and expanded healthcare centres across the state.

According to him, 267 solar-powered two-bedroom flats have been delivered for vulnerable residents, while the state’s social register-based food distribution programme has reached more than 500,000 households.

He pointed to the Arise Resort, billed for commissioning in December, as a flagship tourism project expected to attract millions of visitors.

Other investments include a 5,000-capacity International Convention Centre, a 200-room Ibom Hotel, the Arise City Centre, and the revival of state-owned properties in Abuja and Lagos.

Paying tribute to past governors, Eno urged residents to honour their legacies, maintain unity, and avoid divisive rhetoric ahead of the 2027 elections.

He appealed to youths not to be used to instigate violence, stressing that the law would take its course on anyone who disrupts public peace.

The governor thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support to the state and pledged loyalty to his re-election bid in 2027, alongside Senate President Godswill Akpabio, whom he described as “our dear son.”

“Let us all Arise to a Renewed Hope for Akwa Ibom and for Nigeria,” he said.
