President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said a nation that forgets its fallen heroes risks losing its sense of purpose and direction, as he paid tribute to the men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces who laid down their lives in defence of the country.

In a statement to mark the Armed Forces Remembrance and Celebration Day, the president said Nigeria paused to honour its heroes, noting that while their names may not always be remembered, their courage continues to sustain the country’s freedom and peace.

The nation’s first citizen stressed that remembrance is not merely ceremonial but central to national identity and continuity.

He emphasized that the sacrifices of fallen personnel must never fade from the national consciousness, warning that any country that fails to honour its heroes undermines its own future.

Tinubu added that Nigeria remains a nation that remembers, drawing strength and direction from the bravery of those who gave everything in service to the country.

The president also addressed the families left behind by fallen soldiers, acknowledging the depth of their loss and the enduring pain borne by widows, children, and loved ones.

He said no words could adequately replace the sacrifices made by their fallen relatives, but assured them that Nigeria would never forget their service, which he described as honourable and selfless.

Beyond remembrance, Tinubu paid tribute to serving members of the Armed Forces, commending their courage, discipline, and professionalism across all theatres of operation.

The Nigerian leader noted that from the frontlines to support roles, and across land, sea, and air, Nigerian troops continue to shoulder the heavy responsibility of protecting lives, safeguarding sovereignty, and preserving national stability, often while operating far from home.

Reaffirming his role as President and Commander-in-Chief, Tinubu pledged continued commitment to the welfare and dignity of the Armed Forces, stressing that a secure Nigeria must stand firmly behind those who defend it.

And, declared the government would continue to support personnel in active service, underscoring the link between national security and the wellbeing of those entrusted with its defence.

The President roundedoff by offering prayers for the repose of the souls of fallen heroes, strength for serving personnel, and God’s continued blessings on Nigeria.
