With Governor Douye Diri’s reported move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) shaking the political landscape in Bayelsa, attention is fast shifting to who may emerge as his successor ahead of the 2027 governorship race.

Several political figures have begun quiet consultations, positioning themselves for what promises to be a fiercely contested race.

Here are five individuals seen as frontrunners in the succession conversation.

Mitema Obordor

Mitema Obordor, the lawmaker representing Ogbia Federal Constituency, is widely tipped as one of the leading contenders. A loyalist within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obordor enjoys solid grassroots support in Ogbia, the political base of former President Goodluck Jonathan. He has been a visible voice in national politics and is seen by many as a bridge between old and new political blocs. His ability to rally party structures will play a major role in shaping his chances.

Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil) and a former senator, remains one of the most influential Bayelsa politicians at the federal level. A stalwart of the APC, Lokpobiri’s name consistently features in succession talks due to his long-standing experience and political network that cuts across the state. His national exposure and close ties to Abuja power brokers could strengthen his bid if he decides to run.

Benson Agadaga

Benson Agadaga, the Senator representing Bayelsa East, has also emerged as a strong prospect. A former Chief of Staff in the state and one-time governorship aspirant, Agadaga recently defected to the APC, giving him a fresh platform to reposition his political career. His grassroots connection and calm political temperament are seen as potential assets if the party fields him in 2027.

Fred Agbedi, a long-time PDP powerbroker representing Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency, is another figure with a formidable structure. Known for his consistency and organizational strength, Agbedi has contested for the governorship in the past and remains one of the most experienced political actors in the state. If the PDP decides to field a homegrown loyalist with deep local roots, Agbedi’s name will likely resurface prominently.

Troubled Timipre Sylva, former governor and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, remains an influential force whose moves still shape Bayelsa’s political direction. Though his last attempt to return to the Creek Haven Government House in 2023 was unsuccessful, his strong following and enduring political brand mean he cannot be ruled out of the 2027 race.

With Diri’s expected defection blurring the traditional PDP–APC lines, Bayelsa’s next governorship contest is already gathering steam. For now, these five names stand out in early permutations — but as the state’s politics often shows, new alliances and surprises may still redefine the road to 2027.

The next Bayelsa state gubernatorial election is scheduled for November 11, 2027 with Diri’s second term expected on February 13, 2028.
