3Months After, Workers Lament Unpaid Wages As Public Attention Shifts From Richard Nyong’s Lekki Garden’s Collapsed 5 Storey Building Saga

Information filtering in have it that some of the artisans who worked at the site of the collapsed undergoing construction five storey building owned by Lekki Garden with Richard Nyong as front man are yet to be paid for their toil.

The tragic occurrence transpired in the early hours of Tuesday March 8 2016 at Kushenla Road, Ikate Elegushi, Lekki area of Lagos state and resulted in the death of about thirty people and injury to estimated twelve.
Almost all the victims were workers who chose to sleep at the construction site to save time and cost of communing from home.

The development which witnessed a furore of public outcry had resulted in arrest of the managing director of the company putting up the structure, Richard Nyong and contractor directly in charge, Taiwo Odofin amidst claims of using substandard materials and not failure to secure required approval from the authority .

Nyong secured his freedom on bail Friday March 25 2016 based on self recognition at an Ebute Metta Chief Magistrate Court, his contractor Odofin was admitted to bail on a bond of N1Omillion with 2 sureties in like sum.

Public attention on the development has since been taken over by other developments with the release of other sites and completed buildings owned by Nyong and his Lekki Building initially sealed off by the authorities in the wake of the development.

But while the interest and angst of the baying public appears dissipated with the winds, those of workers at the collapsed site and others owned by Lekki building are still very much alive.

According to the source who worked as one of the artisans on site, a certain contractor usually reach out to them but he claimed ‘’he is yet to receive payment…so can’t pay too’’.

The source claimed he confirmed co workers are yet to be paid as well.

‘’we don’t know when they will pay us..they are not telling us anything’’ the source further revealed.
