Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, Oluwole Oke, has raised concerns over the alleged political alignment of the Osun State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), warning that such partisanship threatens both democratic values and essential grassroots service delivery.

In a strongly worded statement issued on August 2, 2025, the lawmaker representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency described reports of the union abandoning its core duties in favor of political interests as “disturbing” and “dangerous.”

Oke cautioned that NULGE, which was established to champion the welfare and rights of local government employees, must remain non-partisan in line with the Public Service Rules and the Trade Unions Act. He lamented that the alleged actions of the Osun chapter amount to a betrayal of public trust, particularly for citizens who depend on local government services such as healthcare, sanitation, and primary education.

“It is ironic that a union that has long advocated for local government autonomy would now become an appendage of state political interests, undermining its own credibility and purpose,” Oke noted.

The federal lawmaker called on the national leadership of NULGE to urgently step in and restore order and neutrality within the Osun chapter. He also urged local government workers to recommit to their constitutional responsibilities and resist being drawn into political maneuvering.

“Public service is a sacred trust,” Oke stressed. “Political loyalty should never override constitutional duty. We must put the people of Osun State first — above party lines, individual ambitions, and temporary political advantage.”

The statement has sparked conversations within the state.
