There is a popular name on the lips of top politicians in Lagos State—Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education.

The medical doctor, who specializes in nephrology, is being strongly touted as the successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who leaves office in 2027. And the claims are that he is the real deal.

Alausa, who served briefly as the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare—from August 21, 2023, to October 24, 2024—before being redeployed as the Minister of Education, enjoys extraordinary but behind-the-scenes closeness with President Bola Tinubu.

He was touted as a possible candidate for the Lagos governorship in the 2023 election before President Tinubu directed the “maintaining of status quo,” which ensured Sanwo-Olu’s return for a second term.

There are claims that he is on his way to becoming Lagos Governor in 2027, based on ongoing positioning to bolster his standing in places that matter.

The posturing is labeled as an intentional attempt by those with links to the clique that will make the final decision.

“That is the claim and why he is getting plenty of mentions among top politicians,” sources say.

Checks reveal that, despite these talks, the Minister has not made any declaration of gubernatorial intention.
