Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation and ex-governor of Rivers state, says what sets former vice-president Atiku Abubakar apart is his unwavering commitment to democratic values and nation-building — a consistency he describes as rare in Nigeria’s political history.

In a birthday message shared on Tuesday to mark Atiku’s 79th birthday, Amaechi said the celebration goes beyond honouring a statesman, arguing that it acknowledges a life that has “consistently shaped Nigeria’s national journey”.

He recalled Atiku’s early years in the Nigerian Customs Service and his role in forging pro-democracy coalitions throughout the 1980s and 1990s, noting that the former vice-president was instrumental in laying the groundwork for Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

According to him, many of the political structures and institutions that define contemporary governance in Nigeria “were shaped by the partnerships and platforms” Atiku helped build.

Amaechi also highlighted Atiku’s tenure as vice-president between 1999 and 2007, crediting him with championing reforms that opened Nigeria to global engagement and created long-term opportunities for millions of citizens. He said the impact of those reforms continues to ripple through national institutions today.

He added that Atiku’s steadfastness in promoting democratic ideals, even in the face of political obstacles, remains one of his defining strengths. Amaechi said the former vice-president has continued to provide counsel, advocate reform and defend the idea that Nigeria is worth fighting for.

“As we celebrate your lifelong legacy of service to the nation, my family and I join all Nigerians to pray that the Almighty grants you great health, clarity and the grace to continue contributing to the progress of our nation,” he said, ending with the prayer: “Allah ya kara maka lafiya da hikima,” which translates to “May God increase you in health and wisdom.”
