Tinubu’s House Petrol – Bombed
Charles Oyelesi
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently stoked the ember of controversies around his person.
He released a video in which he declared himself the leader of all democrats regardless of political party and one of those that made huge sacrifices for the establishment of democracy in Nigeria.
The claims attracted widespread reactions including doubts over Tinubu’s credibility as one of the nation’s champions of democracy from his critics.
Tunde Rahman, the spokesperson of the influential has however tackled such criticisms headlong with the assertion that ‘’Asiwaju’s political background is replete with his fight for the enthronement and entrenchment of democracy in the land even at the risk to his own life. In his first appearance in the Senate in 1992, he played a leading role in the resolution passed by that august body that the military must ensure it handed over to a democratically-elected president after the annulment of June 12 election. Such was his agitation against the military that on one occasion during the darkest days, his house was petrol-bombed by the agents of the military who thought he had been roasted inside. He managed to escape abroad on exile where he continued with the agitation for democracy in Nigeria…’’
Rahman, a former Editor with Thisday Newspaper disclosed this in a write-up that addressed the issues surrounding the shocking defeat suffered by Tinubu’s party, the All Progressives Congress in Saturday, September 19, 2020, Edo gubernatorial election.
The write-up titled ”Asiwaju Tinubu and Edo Election” was published in thecable.ng.
The video released by Tinubu laying claim to the position of ‘’a leader of all democrats regardless of party’’ was meant to galvanize votes for Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the candidate of the APC in the gubernatorial election.
