Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has been actively engaging in high-level discussions at the 79th edition of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, focusing on key areas such as disaster relief, health, and agriculture. On the sidelines of the ongoing UNGA, Shettima met with the leadership of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, led by Dr. Christopher Elias, head of the Global Development Programme.
The discussions culminated in the approval of a $600,000 relief fund for victims of the recent devastating floods in Maiduguri, Borno State and other affected regions in Nigeria.
Additionally, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation committed to further collaboration on health and agricultural reforms.
Shettima announced that the Foundation has also approved a $5 million grant to Lagos Business School and its partners for the development of industrial cassava economics, a move that is expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s agricultural sector in revelations he made in a social media post today, September 26, 2024.
In his remarks, Vice President Shettima underscored the Tinubu administration’s dedication to prioritizing health, nutrition, and agriculture as critical components of the national agenda. His participation in the UNGA has included several meetings with international stakeholders, with the aim of securing partnerships to improve Nigeria’s socioeconomic development.
Since the UNGA kicked off on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, Shettima has also participated in discussions on global health challenges and climate change, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to addressing these issues. He has met with various world leaders and organizations to explore ways of increasing foreign investment in the country’s infrastructure and human capital.
The 79th UNGA is slated to continue until Saturday, September 28, 2024, and Shettima is expected to continue holding discussions aimed at advancing Nigeria’s international partnerships and development goals.
