Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday, June 28, 2025, continued to sidestep swirling claims that he may be dropped from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s expected second-term ticket, as he focused instead on governance during an official visit to Ethiopia.

Shettima spent the day touring key agricultural and industrial facilities across the East African country, using the occasion to deepen Nigeria’s engagement with Ethiopia on climate action and economic cooperation.

In a statement shared on his official social media account, the Vice President revealed that Nigeria is set to launch a massive national tree-planting campaign in the upcoming rainy season—drawing inspiration from Ethiopia’s highly regarded Green Legacy Programme.

The initiative, he said, aims to plant 20 billion trees as part of a broader national reforestation and environmental sustainability strategy.

“This will require immense planning, energy, and drive—something Ethiopia has successfully demonstrated by galvanising its population around a common goal,” Shettima noted.

He praised the Green Legacy Programme as a model that successfully blends climate action with economic opportunity, particularly in agriculture and industry.

The Vice President’s continued visibility on major policy fronts—despite political speculation—underscores his steady role in advancing the Tinubu administration’s climate diplomacy and development agenda.

His remarks in Ethiopia have been widely interpreted as a signal of focus and resilience in the face of political distractions.
