Former Vice President and presidential hopeful, Atiku Abubakar, has declared that the opposition coalition being assembled ahead of the 2027 general elections is a serious and strategic effort that will soon be formally unveiled to Nigerians.

Atiku made this known on Monday during a meeting with a delegation of Kannywood stakeholders and key opinion leaders from the North West geopolitical zone.

The delegation was led by Dr Aslam Aliyu, a prominent Zamfara politician and convener of the PAA 2027 New Media & Digital Communications Forum, an emerging coalition of influential new media actors and digital political strategists.

The former Vice President noted that the envisaged coalition is not just a political arrangement but a deliberate movement to recover and rebuild Nigeria in line with the genuine yearnings and aspirations of its people.

He emphasized that the coalition is rooted in a desire to offer the country a credible alternative to the current administration, which many Nigerians now view as a failed project.

Atiku disclosed that he was particularly inspired by revelations from the visiting stakeholders, who informed him that they are already mobilizing new media forces in the North West to rally support for the planned opposition alliance.

According to him, the delegation – which includes Kannywood figures, members of the Zamfara Top 10, and other interest groups – told him their commitment was born out of a critical review of the 2023 general elections. They said the outcome exposed significant voter awareness and information gaps that must be urgently addressed to avoid a repeat of past mistakes.

Some members of the delegation, Atiku revealed, openly expressed regret for their roles in supporting the ruling APC and President Bola Tinubu’s candidacy in 2023, describing the resulting leadership as “incompetent and clueless.” They pledged to support the new opposition coalition to ensure that a truly representative, competent leadership emerges in 2027.

“I assured the forum that 2027 will not be business as usual,” Atiku said. “I charged them to take their commitment seriously and enlighten the people on the need to embrace the ongoing efforts to recover and rebuild Nigeria for the good of the majority.”

He acknowledged the challenges confronting the country, particularly the escalating insecurity and widespread economic hardship, but maintained that the opposition coalition has the capacity – both individually and collectively – to tackle them.

“The opposition coalition is not a joke. It is real, and it will be unveiled soon,” Atiku declared confidently.

The meeting underscores a growing momentum among key northern political actors and digital advocacy groups who are coalescing around a shared vision to chart a new path for Nigeria, starting with a united opposition front.
