“Nigeria Is Ours To Safeguard,” Remi Tinubu Calls For Unity Against Fake Stories Sabotaging Govt
warning that false narratives are now being weaponised
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has appealed to Nigerians to rise against the growing wave of misinformation and fake reports circulating across the country, warning that false narratives are now being weaponised to sow fear, undermine national stability, and sabotage the efforts of the government.
She made the call in a social media narrative on Tuesday, November 25, 2025.
Mrs Tinubu noted that several individuals and groups have become increasingly deliberate in twisting events, editing videos, and manufacturing stories—particularly around issues of insecurity—with the aim of creating panic and eroding public trust.
“Some people intentionally twist events or invent stories just to create confusion and make Nigerians lose trust in their government,” she said.
The former Senator described the trend as dangerous and capable of destabilising communities if citizens continue to share unverified claims.
According to her, the circulation of fake news does not only damage the country’s image but also jeopardises the collective progress Nigerians are working hard to achieve.
And, urged the public to resist emotional reactions to voice notes, videos, and sensational claims, saying every questionable message should be verified before being shared.
“Before you share anything, take a moment to verify it,” she appealed, pointing out “Not everything forwarded to you is true.”
She stressed that many people unknowingly become part of the problem by forwarding unconfirmed information, thereby amplifying falsehoods engineered to mislead the nation and portray the government in a negative light. She encouraged Nigerians to rely on credible sources and official updates before forming opinions or spreading news.
“Fake news harms all of us,” she said, emphasizing that “it destabilises communities, causes unnecessary panic, and damages the peace and unity we are working hard to build. Nigeria is ours, and it is our duty to safeguard it.”
The First Lady added that collective responsibility remains one of the most powerful tools in protecting the integrity of the nation, urging citizens to rise above those who intentionally seek to misinform the public and commit themselves only to sharing verified truths.
