LASAA Kicks Against Illegal Billboard In Army Barrack, Vows Strict Enforcement Of Safety Regulations
reiterating its commitment to ensuring public safety
Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) has addressed rising community concerns over an illegal billboard in Abati Barrack, Surulere, which has collapsed twice, causing injuries and property damage.
The agency has taken a firm stance, disassociating itself from the unauthorized structure and reiterating its commitment to ensuring public safety in Lagos’ outdoor advertising sector.
According to LASAA, the billboard in question, owned by Radius Resources Limited, was never registered with the agency and was, therefore, illegal.
The company had already been sanctioned and suspended by LASAA since October 24, 2024, for unethical practices. As a result, it had no right to reinstall the fallen billboard. Despite repeated efforts by LASAA to regulate advertising structures within military, police, and air force formations in Lagos, the agency revealed that it had not received the necessary cooperation.
This lack of support has created loopholes, allowing unsafe advertising structures to be erected in restricted areas without proper oversight. LASAA insists that security formations must comply with the state’s regulations to prevent future hazards.
Following the recent incident, LASAA has taken immediate steps to prevent further risks.
The agency has placed an official stop-work order on the location and notified the Nigerian Army to halt all constructions for a thorough re-assessment. Additionally, Radius Resources Limited remains suspended, with LASAA reaffirming that the company is barred from reinstalling the billboard.
The agency also reminded the public that any billboard installation outside its regulatory oversight is considered illegal and poses a potential safety risk.
Managing Director of LASAA, Prince Fatiu Akiolu, emphasized the agency’s zero-tolerance policy on billboard installations that threaten public safety. He urged all stakeholders, including outdoor advertising practitioners and security formations, to collaborate with LASAA and comply with the existing laws governing billboard installations. He stressed the importance of enforcing safety regulations to prevent avoidable accidents and protect lives and property in Lagos. “We must work together to ensure advertising practices in Lagos are safe, respectful, and sustainable while prioritizing the safety of residents and visitors,” he stated. He further reassured Lagos residents that the agency remains committed to enforcing standards that protect the public from potential dangers, reiterating that “The safety of our residents is our top priority, and we take incidents like this very seriously.”
LASAA has also encouraged community members and security personnel to report any billboard installations that appear unsafe or violate regulations.
The agency believes that by fostering collaboration between the government, businesses, and the public, Lagos can maintain both safety and the aesthetic integrity of its urban landscape.
As the authority responsible for managing and regulating outdoor advertising in Lagos, LASAA reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring that all signage and branding opportunities in the state adhere to strict safety guidelines.
