FRSC Lists Crucial Things For Drivers Amid Heavy Rain
to prevent road mishaps during wet weather conditions.
As Nigeria enters a period of intensified rainfall, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a strong advisory urging motorists to adopt critical safety measures to prevent road mishaps during wet weather conditions.
The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, emphasized the increased risks of driving in the rain, noting that wet conditions often result in reduced visibility and slippery roads—factors that significantly heighten the chance of accidents. He stressed that safety-consciousness is non-negotiable for all road users during this season.
“Driving in the rain demands extra caution. Motorists must understand that visibility is compromised and the road surface is more dangerous. Basic safety steps can make the difference between a safe journey and a tragedy,” Mohammed stated.
The Corps Marshal listed key precautionary measures all drivers should take before embarking on trips during rainfall. These include:
Ensuring windows and windshields are clean both inside and outside.
Routinely checking all lights—headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and tail lights—for functionality.
Verifying that windshield wipers and blades are working properly; improvising with towels in place of wipers is strongly discouraged.
Keeping vehicle lights on during rainfall, even in the daytime.
Reducing speed and applying what he described as the “common sense speed limit” to suit wet road conditions.
Confirming that tyres are not worn out to guarantee proper traction.
“Tyres are the only part of a vehicle that touches the road. Their condition is essential to road safety, especially during rain,” he added.
To reinforce this safety campaign, the Corps Marshal has directed Commanding Officers across all FRSC formations to intensify traffic calming efforts, ramp up public education, and strictly enforce compliance with wiper and tyre standards.
He also urged drivers who feel unfit or uncomfortable navigating under heavy rain to stay off the roads for their own safety and that of others.
Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Public Education Officer, reiterated that the FRSC is fully committed to reducing road traffic crashes during the rainy season through proactive safety advocacy and targeted enforcement.
The Corps enjoins all Nigerians to play their part in embracing these life-saving precautions as the rains persist.
