Details: MTN Y’ello Care To Transform Abandoned Lagos High School
the once shining school building became dilapidated
In the heart of Lakowe lies Iwerekun Community Senior High School, where the dream of getting a good education is extremely threatened by poor infrastructure. This was the fate of the students at the high school before ‘Y’ello Care’.
Things appear as bleak as the current state of the school building and classrooms as they go daily for their lessons. Iwerekun Community High School built in the heart of Ibeju-Lekki, Epe, by the government, has seen several generations of children from the Lakowe community pass through it.
Over the years, the once shining school building became dilapidated due to lack of proper maintenance to foster learning.
A first glance at the school will show you broken tables, chairs, ceilings and partitions shabbily designed to demarcate the classrooms as well as naked roofs, pillars and many other deplorable parts of the precarious ‘construction’
With such an unconducive, unsafe and stressful learning environment, it’s evident that the primary aim of providing excellent education and grooming the next generation of outstanding leaders seems impossible.

Enter the MTN Y’ello Care initiative, an annual campaign holding for 30 days this year, where MTN staff contribute funds, devoting time and resources to specific social impact projects within their communities.
This year, which marks the 17th edition of Y’ello Care, the staff decided to focus their resources on engendering a significant change in Iwerekun community by renovating the Community High School to a state that guarantees effective learning.
The Y’ello employees are keen on providing both current and incoming students at the school a conducive and safe learning environment. Every MTNner shares the belief that every child deserves quality education regardless of their socio-economic background.
With renovation plans in place, 996 current students at the high school will have an opportunity to learn in a better environment.
In addition to this, MTNers will be supporting the KNOSK Charity Education Initiative (Study Better Packs) for students and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)’s Safe School Initiative, spearheaded by the National Safe School Response Coordination Centre.
MTN Nigeria has, over the years, demonstrated uncommon commitment to positively impacting its communities through numerous social investments across various spheres, and driving sustainable development.
