The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the 2027 Ogun State governorship election, Ladi Adebutu, has unveiled Alhaja (Dr.) Oyeyemi Sowunmi Kolapo as his running mate, bringing on board a seasoned media executive, business leader and respected Muslim community figure.

The choice of Sowunmi Kolapo is expected to add political, professional and grassroots value to the PDP ticket as the party intensifies preparations for the 2027 governorship contest.

A prominent figure in Ogun State’s Muslim community, Sowunmi Kolapo holds several traditional and religious titles. She is the Iyalode of Egba Muslims, the first Ameerah General of Ogun State, Ameerah of Ijemoland and Iya Sunnah of Egbaland.

Beyond her religious and community engagements, she has built a distinguished career in journalism, business and public service.

Sowunmi Kolapo currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Group Managing Director of Right Dev Limited. She is also the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of The Point Newspaper, where she has played a key role in shaping public discourse and media development.

Before venturing into media entrepreneurship, she rose through the ranks in journalism and served as Group Business Editor of The Punch Newspapers, one of Nigeria’s most influential newspapers.

Her experience in governance includes serving as Senior Special Assistant on Communications and Strategy to former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga, where she was involved in strategic communications and policy advocacy during the minister’s tenure.

Political observers say her combination of media expertise, administrative experience, business leadership and strong connections within religious and community circles could strengthen the PDP’s outreach across key constituencies in Ogun State.

She joins Adebutu, a businessman and long-standing PDP chieftain who has emerged as the party’s standard bearer in multiple election cycles.

Adebutu, the son of renowned businessman and philanthropist Sir Kensington Adebutu, has remained one of the most visible opposition figures in Ogun politics over the last decade.

Widely known for his philanthropic activities through the Ladi Adebutu Development Organisation (LADO), Adebutu has contested the Ogun governorship election on the PDP platform and remains one of the party’s most recognisable political figures in the state.

With the emergence of Sowunmi Kolapo as deputy governorship candidate, the PDP is positioning a ticket that combines political experience, grassroots engagement, media influence and community leadership as it seeks to challenge for power in Ogun State in 2027.
