7 Places NTDA Boss Folorunsho Coker Is Using To Boost Lesser-Known Tourist Destinations
changing the face of the nation’s tourism industry
It is indisputable that the Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority, Folorunsho Coker, is changing the face of the nation’s tourism industry — for the better.
Aside from helping to establish a regulatory framework for robust development, another major focus of Nigeria’s leading tourism advocate is promoting lesser-known destinations within the country.
Coker, whose pivotal industry-defining concept “One Lagos” as the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism and Culture remains unmatched, has been unrelenting in drawing attention to unexplored sites, elevating areas rich in cultural heritage, natural beauty, and unique attractions for tourists to enjoy diverse and enriching experiences.
Here are seven tourism sites Folorunsho Coker and the NTDA are using to achieve this goal, spreading economic benefits to more communities and helping the country achieve regional growth.
The medieval-inspired structure located in the hills of Kaduna, Kajuru Castle, has become a popular tourist attraction thanks to the NTDA’s campaigns under Coker’s leadership.

Known for its distinct architecture, serene environment, and mountain views, Kajuru Castle has been attracting both local and international tourists seeking a fairytale-like experience within Nigeria since the NTDA put a spotlight on it.
Nigeria’s first UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) site, Sukur Cultural Landscape, in Adamawa State, is receiving renewed interest thanks to the NTDA’s efforts.
Findings reveal that the NTDA is intensely promoting cultural tourism and interest in Nigeria’s ancient civilizations by highlighting the ancient stone terraces, sacred symbols, and the hilltop palace of the Hidi (local ruler).
Also at the forefront of Coker’s tourism promotions is the UNESCO World Heritage site prospect, Idanre Hills, in Ondo.
Known for its unique rock formations, ancient caves, and panoramic views, the NTDA is using Idanre Hills to showcase the historical significance and breathtaking landscapes that thrill adventure-seekers, hikers, and history enthusiasts alike.
Ogbunike Caves in Anambra State has enjoyed improved visibility through Coker’s initiatives.

With UNESCO World Heritage potential, the caves are attracting tourists interested in geology, history, and spirituality. The key attractions of the caves, which hold strong cultural and spiritual significance for the Igbo people, include their intricate tunnels and natural formations.
Not left out of NTDA’s campaigns to increase global interest in Nigeria’s tourist sites is Obudu Mountain Resort in Cross River State.
Distinctively set in the highlands of Cross River, the resort boasts a cool climate, lush landscapes, winding roads, and cable car rides. It has become a favorite for visitors seeking eco-friendly retreats, a perfect serene escape from urban areas, driven by the NTDA’s promotional efforts.
Also on the list is the cascading Olumirin Waterfalls, otherwise known as Erin Ijesha Waterfalls, a multi-level natural wonder located in Erin Ijesha in Osun State.

The site has become a focal point of the NTDA’s ecotourism campaign. The agency is leveraging, among other things, the therapeutic environment and recreational opportunities, including swimming and picnicking, to attract attention to the site and to Nigeria as a whole.
Rounding off the list of NTDA’s selected sites in the campaign that supports Coker’s mission to transform Nigeria into a more inclusive, multidimensional travel destination is Gashaka Gumti National Park, located in Taraba and Adamawa states.
A haven for wildlife and adventure tourism, Gashaka Gumti is one of the largest and most biodiverse parks in Nigeria. Reports show that the NTDA continues to promote the allure of the park’s mountains, rivers, and diverse wildlife at this conservation site.
Among other benefits, Gashaka Gumti National Park offers guided tours and bird-watching, enhancing its appeal for nature enthusiasts.
