The University of Lagos – Unilag – invited Musiliu Akinsanya, the Chairman of the National Union Of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) better known as MC Oluomo as a guest speaker to a program on Transportation and all hell is let loose on social media.

The development has sparked off a controversy that paints the higher institution of learning in dark.
Checks by societynow.ng learned, however, revealed that Unilag –the transport department – should be applauded rather than vilified.

Oluomo is today the number one transporter in Lagos state.

MC Oluomo sits on a transport union body whose earnings surpass the budget of a larger number of the states in Nigeria.

‘’Some states cannot even boast of what the NURTW in Lagos state make in less than a quarter’’ an insider insists.

Oluomo served at a top level of the NURTW (treasurer) for twelve years (12yrs) before he recently became the Chairman of the caretaker committee in charge of the union in Lagos state.
According to the ranking of the NURTW, the treasurer is the unofficial number 2, closely followed by the Secretary.

Before he became secretary Oluomo served – still is – branch chairman of the NURTW in Oshodi, Lagos state.

‘’He was chairman before Oshodi was broken into nine branches to appease aggrieved members and keep the peace. Oluomo transformed all those branch chairmen into his passionate supporters’’ societynow.ng learned.

Further digs revealed that the new NURTW chairman in Lagos state pioneered the era of ‘’bloodless’’ takeover of garages and branches.

‘’How did he become the branch chairman in Oshodi?…he negotiated with all other stakeholders and the police were brought in to arrest anybody who wanted to make trouble’’ a source disclosed.

MC Oluomo started by making Oshodi safe by negotiating with the pickpockets, bag snatchers and others to either take up meaningful employments, join the union for daily earnings as agents or leave the place societynow.ng learned.

The approach was introduced into other areas in Lagos state when the NURTW saw that reduced crime boosted their earnings as more commuters throng into garages – and bus stops – with the safety of their person and property guaranteed.

And that is a big boost for security societynow.ng’s source asserted.

‘’Interestingly the NURTW is big in the employment of graduates at least in Lagos state and MC Oluomo is one of those that started this in Oshodi, check out their state headquarter and branch offices to confirm this. Most of the places parade state of the art equipment and are certainly not managed by touts’’ a source stated.

‘’While admitting MC Oluomo has other not so bright sides but staying within the confines of what is relevant to the issue at hand, who else should be invited to talk about Transportation. He may not be the number one but he should certainly be one of the top people to be considered’’ societynow.ng learned.

‘’After all what is learning? The process of studying something to acquire knowledge – and wisdom – to make a difference. Oluomo is a real-life case to be listened to and questioned at the event for the students and other stakeholders to get knowledge…Unilag should be applauded for providing the venue for the student to interact with someone that affects their lives and not limit their education to occurrences in another clime narrated in textbooks and handouts’’ an educationist stated.
