Why Lagos Transport Union Boss, Istijaba Is On Many Lips Over Drivers, Agberos Clash

Wednesday, March 29, 2023, commercial bus drivers in Lagos state left many stranded.

They downed tools over increased tolls by agents of the Lagos State Park Management Authority widely known as Agberos in street parlance.

The Lagos State Park Management Authority replaced the National Union of Road Transport Workers – retaining chairman, MC Oluomo (Musiliu Akinsanya) – in April 2022.

Wednesday’s protest by the Drivers of the popular “yellow buses” resulted in violent skirmishes, particularly in Agbado area of Lagos throwing up the name of a transport union boss, Instijabah here and there SocietyNow.Ng gathered.

The information available revealed that things went awry after the intervention by the transport unionist whose real name is Abdul Azeez Abiola.

Instijabah who attracted headlines last by backing National President Ibikunle Baruwa against state chairman, MC Oluomo before the suspension of NURTW activities in Lagos state reportedly waded into Wednesday’s face-off between commercial bus drivers and Agberos in a manner rejected by the latter.

“The police moved in to restore law and order in the face of building tension between the Drivers and Agberos and things worsened ” SocietyNow.Ng gathered.

Added information revealed that Instijabah became a talking point after the reality of the losses suffered by both sides in a violent clash to sack one another from the road dawned on them.

The transport union boss with a leg in the two sides (owner of commercial buses and stakeholder in the park management authority) is accused of not handling the situation with tact.

The increased tolls are a combination of the official and unofficial charges collected by all means possible from drivers by the Agberos on behalf of the Lagos State Park Management Revenue.

It is a shared revenue between the Park Management Authority and the Government.
